Figured I’d announce this early so it’s on people’s radar. I’m planning a large scale Oppomeet to take place around this time next year, at the toughest hill climb race in North America, if not the world. If you think I’m talking about Pikes Peak then you must be new here.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
After two years off the Mount Washington Hillclimb is back for 2017, and is finally being held on a different week from Pikes Peak, which means there’s a chance a few of the big names will do the double. Mount Washington’s even will be July 6-9, 2017, with the 6-8 being registration, recce, and half-course practice runs, and two runs of the full course on the 9th.
The main event for Oppomeet On The Mountain will, of course, be spectating the race, but I’m also planning on setting up a group drive up the mountain, a group ride up the cog rail, a pre-event party (location TBD), an Oppo mini golf tournament, and, for those who dare, a hike up the mountain the day after the race (weather permitting).
Yes, that’s what the trail looks like.
Mark your calendars and get your hiking boots ready.

How stupid would I be to start prepping Charlie for this? I intend to drive him there and back.

Wouldn’t be stupid at all. Good to be prepared and all that.

I mean to participate in the rally... Might need a volunteer to be willing to trailer it back to the city if he doesn’t make it, but driving it there, racing it, watching the laughter turn to dropped jaws, and then driving it back would be the goal.

Oh man I wanna take the Lancer up there so much, haha. (What, it’s been everywhere else?)

Well I was going to be there anyway, so you can count me in. Last time we drove up first thing in the morning, and hiked down to the cragway. Lots of great spots to sit and hang out there (and get buzzed by the chopper)

Dude! Sweet! I’m too out of shape for the hike, but likely in for most or all of the rest. Naturally if they need ham radio operators, I’m likely to be answering that call rather than spectating.

This is me, riding up Mt. Washington on a 1982 Honda Silverwing GL500i. It still has its “This bike climbed Mt. Washington” to prove it.
If that bike can do it, your Lancer absolutely can. You know you want to.

I so want to go to this. I actually have an event at Mt. Washington in August for New England Mazda Auto Club where we rent the road for a sunset cruise. If you haven’t driven up it the road doesn’t seem that scary.. but it certainly can be when you can only see about 15 feet ahead of you. So glad they decided to run the event again.
Also if you are looking for a good place to stay “The Seasons” in Attatash NH is a nice set of rent-able condos. We usually have about 20 people stay there for our event.

I’m interested, but terrible at planning things a year out. In fact I have trouble planning for next week sometimes. But as it draws closer I will have a better idea and hopefully I can make it.
I’ve done the hike before, it was pretty brutal. We took the alternate trail down, the one where you have to slide down a rock face, and then hop across a boulder field. That kicked ass.

That’s okay, I don't intend to be spectating either ;)

If I have a car by then (fingers crossed this current job pans out) and I have time, sure! But those combined puts me pretty heavily in the “most likely not” category, which is lame.

A lot of automatic Hondas are banned from the road

I may be down for this. A couple of friends and I were thinking of hiking the mountain this year but it didn’t end up working out so if it’s still on the table for next year I’ll do my best to make sure my trip coincides with this.

Any particular reason they aren’t allowed?

Gearing. Because of how steep the mountain is drivers are instructed to descend in first gear to keep from burning out the brakes. A number of automatic Honda transmissions can’t be locked into first and will upshift coming down the mountain. Suffice to say this has been deemed “bad”

Okay, we have five people on here considering participating in some way. At what point can we declare a Team Oppo and set up a party tent in the grid?

Sherm (sdwarf36) has already offered his pit. It wouldn’t take much to turn his tow bus into a party bus

I need to start reading up on the rules, but I don’t see any reason for me to not make it. How are pit-assignments made? First come-first serve or are they picked at random? Would be sweet if we could group our pits.

I know they’re more or less done by class, but not sure of details beyond that.
